Stop Waiting - Start Leading

The Truth About Leadership Readiness

Summary: Many people hesitate to step into leadership, believing they need a bigger title, more confidence, or additional experience. But leadership isn’t something that’s handed to you one day - it’s something you actively step into, before you ’feel ready’. By taking ownership, speaking up, and leading through influence rather than position, you can grow your impact and confidence, proving that leadership is about mindset, not hierarchy.

Does this sound familiar?

You have years of experience under your belt, yet when it comes to leadership, you still look to others, thinking it’s not quite your place - at least not yet. Maybe you assume leadership is reserved for those with bigger titles, more confidence, or more experience.  And you tell yourself that with a few more years, you’ll eventually get there too.

But as time passes, that feeling of not being ‘ready’ can linger. You look around and still see others who seem more accomplished, more articulate, or more deserving.

Because here’s the truth: there is no magic switch to flip, no promotion, no special moment when leadership is handed to you, making you suddenly feel ready. Leadership is about gradually stepping up - and learning along the way.

Common Myths That Hold Us Back

One of the biggest barriers to stepping into leadership isn’t lack of skill; it’s the stories we tell ourselves about why we’re not ready. Here are some of the most common ones:

  • I need a bigger title before I can lead.

  • Others in my field have more impressive credentials.

  • I don’t have the confidence to take charge.

  • Leaders should know the answers.  And I often don’t.

  • If I just keep working hard, someone will notice and promote me.

But leadership isn’t about waiting to be chosen. It’s about demonstrating influence, taking ownership, and stepping into opportunities - regardless of seniority or title.

Five Ways to Step Into Leadership No

If leadership isn’t about a title, how can you step into it today?

Here are some practical strategies:

  1. Own your influence – You have plenty of expertise. Use it to guide others, set direction, and shape outcomes in your organisation.

  2. Speak with authority – You don’t need permission to share your insights. Challenge ideas, voice solutions, and lead discussions confidently.

  3. Lead without a title – Take responsibility for projects, mentor others, or spearhead initiatives. Leadership is about impact, not position.

  4. Get comfortable with visibility – Put yourself forward for opportunities, whether that’s leading meetings, presenting ideas, or networking with senior leaders.

  5. Take calculated risks – Leaders don’t wait for perfect certainty. Push yourself into stretch assignments, make bold decisions, and learn from those moments when things don’t go entirely to plan.

Final Thought

No matter how much experience we have, many of us never feel completely ‘ready’ to lead. We’ll always think there is someone who's smarter, more capable, or more experienced - because there probably is. But true leadership isn’t about being the best. It’s about being willing to step up, take ownership, and act despite self-doubt.

The leaders you admire didn’t get there by accident. They actively stepped forward before they felt 100% prepared.

Start now, and watch your confidence and influence grow.
